Eloise returned to Whitmore Halls. For weeks, she was intolerable, sulking around the rooms and halls, petulant and dismissive of Ulmaâs questions and wonderings. Ulmaâs health had improved over the months Eloise was gone, though she couldnât rid herself of the persistent cough that plagued her in early mornings. Charles seemed to be thriving. He enjoyed his drives to and from Louisville and kept up the trade long after the war had ended.
Benjamin Costello did indeed become mayor. He stood on the front steps of the courthouse one Sunday morning in the piercing light of early summer and spoke about the prosperity of the town. Valerie Dunn was at his side, holding a bouquet of sunflowers and waving out at the crowd. They would be married in the spring.
Benjamin made good on his word to bring the railways to Darren. In May, three weeks after his marriage to Valerie, long lines were drawn along the canal and, by the time winter came, men were eager for work.
For a long while, Whitmore Halls was quiet. The rooms seemed larger now, Eloise thought, after her stay in the crowded halls of Dusty Hills. With Ruth back in Chicago and Benjamin standing with his arm wrapped around Valerie on the front steps of the courthouse, loneliness consumed Eloise. Ulma tried to ask her about medicine, about the procedures and equipment she used up at the hospital, but Eloise was a half-hearted teacher, and Ulma was tired, leaving them both exhausted and disheartened.
Life at Whitmore Halls was draining, and the days stretched long and wide. Yet it was on one of those mundane, unassuming days that Eloise Price opened the front door and there, on the doorstep, was Ruth.
